One book that has changed your life: The Sword of Shannara - it was
the first fantasy novel I ever read and hooked me into the genre

2. One book you have read more than once: The Black Company - read it
yourself to find out why

3. One book you would want on a desert island: The Bible - because I've never found the time

4. One book that made you laugh: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy -
it's a British thing, okay?

5. One book that made you cry: All Quiet on the Western Front - read it
yourself to find out why

6. One book you wish had been written: My NYT bestseller that sweeps the Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards

7. One book you wish had never been written: Accelerando by Charles
Stross - because it means I probably can't write proper SF after all

8. One book you are currently reading: The Steam Magnate by Dana
Copithorne - it arrived in the mailbox the other day to be reviewed

9. One book you've been meaning to read: Twenty Epics - to see if the
other stories are better than mine

David:
1. One book that has changed your life: Fire Upon the Deep (because it reminded me how much I like SF and helped drive me off the law track)

2. One book you have read more than once: Lord of the Rings; Childhood's End; Ender's Game

3. One book you would want on a desert island: How to Survive on a Desert Island

4. One book that made you laugh: Angela's Ashes

5. One book that made you cry: Nothing makes me cry. I'm a man. (Okay: Angle of Repose; Doomsday Book; The Left Hand of Darkness; To Kill a Mockingbird [I was a kid!]; and probably lots of others. Mental blocks, you know.)

6. One book you wish had been written: A novel by me.

7. One book you wish had never been written: Xenocide (one of Card's sequels to Ender's game)

8. One book you are currently reading: Running with the Demon (the book Terry Brooks said was his best)

9. One book you've been meaning to read: The Bible. (I get through small parts, then have to put it down.)

Nicole

1. changed life: On Human Nature (E. O. Wilson)
2. read over: Offshore (Penelope Fitzgerald)
3. desert island: oh, the Bible, I think, as others have answered
4. laughed: Just this afternoon I laughed at "The Dumb Bunnies Celebrate Christmas." My nephew laughed so hard he couldn't breathe.
5. cried: so many -- but Ian put Sword of Shannara down for something, and it reminded me that I sobbed over that book. In a disgusting hotel room in Wyoming.
6. wished for: Jane Austen's follow up to Persuasion. I think Tina C. put this too.
7. wished didn't exist: Almost all good writers should allow their 8th and 9th books to be pretty heavily edited, if not burnt to ash.
8. reading currently: Victorian London (Liza Picard)
9. gearing up for: King Leopold's Ghost.

I love Maugham.(and got your mailing - thanks, and...

I love Maugham.

(and got your mailing - thanks, and ditto.)
